2010 network workshop info

A bit of background

Turning the Tide has run two highly successful year-long courses in Friends House, London. Both times we had more applications than available places and some participants travelled long distances, including from other countries. We’ve had many requests to run the course outside London. This experience suggests there is demand for this work all over the country.

Cut to the chase and download the 2010 network info here.

Networking Workshops in 2010 with a view to 2011

Network & Connect

Our intention for 2010 is to run 1-day taster workshops in different parts of the country in order to establish working partnerships with Quaker meetings and local activists. We are keen to help people become more effective in their use of noviolence for social change AND connect with activists and concerned citizens.

For this reason we ask that the hosts of the workshop represent at least 2 different organisations. This might  be a Quaker Meeting and a group like a local chapter of Friends of the Earth or Amnesty, a homespun peace campaigning group or climate activists. Or it might be might two activist groups using the local Quaker Meeting House. The combinations are infinite. We only ask that at least 2 groups be involved in hosting the event.

Remember, the 2010 Network Workshop is a 2-part proposal: 1) to help organise a 1-day workshop in 2010 and 2) evaluate and consider hosting a more comprehensive course at a later date.Previously this has been a year-long course meeting one Saturday a month, but we have other models to offer such as 4 weekend modules and an 8-day intensive, and other models could be considered.

Where do we start?

If you, your Meeting or group is considering hosting a workshop, here are some questions to ask yourselves:

  • Who are the two (or more ... ) groups that will host the workshop?
  • Have you all visited the Turning the Tide website?
  • Have you discussed this with your Meeting/groups to see if there is interest?

Practical stuff

So you've got positive answers to the above questions? Good. Now let's consider some practical stuff.

The venue
Where will the workshop be held? What sort of space is it? Is there lots of room to move around? Can we easily rearrange the chairs, furniture? What sort of equipment is on hand? Flip chart stand, TV and DVD player? A kitchen?

Public Transport
How accessible is the venue? Is there frequent bus or rail service?

Workshop Themes
Have you taken a look at the 2009 course archive to see what what theme you think would be of most interest to your group? The workshop we are offering in this series are based on the themes offered as part of our year-long course. These include:

  • introduction to nonviolence
  • power & change
  • campaigning & organizing
  • building the constructive alternative
  • spirituality & activism
  • nonviolent direct action
  • personal & political empowerment
  • group process

See the course archive on our website for more information

Recruiting Participants and Publicity

How many people from your groups will join the workshop? What is your recruitment and publicity strategy going to be? We can work with you to develop one if need be. But we are counting on you to recruit the participants since we think you know your area best. We require that you have 12 confirmed participants at least one week before the date of the workshop.

Hosting the Training Team
Is someone from your group able to host the training team if they require overnight accommodation? Or can you arrange for them to have somewhere to stay? How will you be able to pay the training team's travel expenses? Workshop fees can off-set this expense.

Contact Turning the Tide

So you've also got answers or some thoughts about the above questions? That's great, now it's time to get in touch with Turning the Tide to talk about hosting a workshop in greater detail.
