Turning the Tide Curriculum: A core collection of material on nonviolence

The curriculum is designed to serve our Resource People in deepening their understanding and knowledge of active nonviolence and to introduce new Resource People to the key concepts and principles on which TTT operates.

While Gandhi and King are the figures which most often pop to mind when nonviolence is mentioned, their work was informed by centuries of thinkers before them, just as Gandhi and King have inspired and guided generations of nonviolent activists since their time.

The readings and resources referred to are not suggestions to mimic successful social movements or to sit waiting for that single, gifted leader. Social change is a creative and collective endeavour and we hope the curriculum taps and connects your energy and vision for change with others.

We all learn in different ways, at different rates, and bring different life experiences to our learning, so decide for yourself how you use these resources. You can go through it page by page or dip into as your interest or needs dictate.

You can download the complete curriculum below or view the thematic sections.

  • Theology, Philosophy and Core Principles of Nonviolence
  • History of Nonviolent Campaigns and Movements
  • Contemporary Nonviolent Campaigns
  • Theory and Strategy: How, why and when nonviolence works
  • Doing it! Developing and applying our technology of peace

The section on core principles and philosophy/theology of nonviolence aims to

  • challenge and fuel for our own ideas about what we do and why
  • be sources of energy, inspiration, perspective, steadiness
  • give us a wider understanding of what nonviolence offers, and of its full implications

Knowledge about the history of nonviolent campaigns and movements can

  • provide a sense of the possibilities, discipline and creative scope of nonviolence
  • be point of reference or offer new perspectives
  • help us get on it with, and stop re-inventing the wheel!

Becoming more familiar with contemporary nonviolent campaigns we can find

  • energy, inspiration and perspectives on our own priorities and work styles
  • practical ideas for new ways of organising and taking action
  • a sense of solidarity, knowledge that a lot is happening and that we are not alone
  • a sense of our own contributions to current movements for social change

The theory and strategy section looks at the 'how, why and when' nonviolence works and helps us to

  • think strategically and consider the effectiveness of our actions
  • become clear about what level of change we are seeking
  • gain insights into the ways in which those involved in conflicts with us might react to our actions and goals

Doing it! Developing and applying our technology of peace is a collection of tools to help us act together sustainably, learn to listen, plan, decide, evaluate and transform conflict.

Also available separately are two documents, one is an overview of the curriculum, and the second advises Resource People on how to use it.
